Millions of people wake up every day with congestion and Allergy symptoms. Most people never associate the connection between their mattress and their Allergies. Unless your mattress is brand new or has been covered with an allergy mattress protector from day 1 most likely it is infested with dust mites and other airborne allergens that irritate your sinuses and eyes. That is why if you suffer from allergies, and have an old bed you need to get an allergy mattress protector.

Think about it you spend about 8 hours a night on your mattress and pillow, so you need to protect yourself from allergens with an allergy mattress protector. Allergy mattress protectors is essential to allergy free sleep, and also keep in mind that you need to put a allergy pillow barrier on your pillow as well. If you simply put an allergy mattress protector on and not cover your pillow you only did half the job and your symptoms may never clear up.

Mattress Protector

Now keep in mind that not all mattress protectors are allergy mattress protectors. There is a big difference between the two. As a sleep professional I recommend one that is waterproof, bed bug, and dust mite resistant. It is very important to be waterproof or resistant, because we put in about 1 liter of fluid per person into the mattress every night. When liquid gets into the mattress from sweat, breath or other ways you make a welcoming environment for mold, fungi, dust mites, bed bugs. If you go with a mattress protector that is not an allergy mattress protector you are doing nothing more than putting on a glorified sheet.

Pillow Barrier

This is just as important as a mattress protector. Physicians on WebMD as well as I recommend a zippered up pillow barrier. Not to gross you out but when we sleep sweat and drool go into the pillow, and when this happens the Petri dish process begins. An unprotected pillow can trigger asthma, strep throat, morning congestion, as well as other respiratory issues.

Mattress

If you are sleeping on an old mattress and are suffering from bad allergies I recommend that you get another mattress immediately. See a mattress that has not had an allergy mattress protector on it gains 1/3 of its total weight every 5 years. This weight increase is due to the fact that dust mites live, breed, and then die in your mattress causing it to gain weight over time. Another sign of massive dust mite and other allergen buildup is stains on the mattress. Not all stains come from us, some come from bacteria growing on the bedding itself.
